Education Costs

The costs of studying in New Zealand will depend on the type of course, where you study and how long you are going to study in the country. The following list gives you information about the range of course and the costs for different types of qualifications.

Primary School â€“ from $11,000 

Secondary School â€“ from $13,000

Diplomas / certificates â€“ 2-year New Zealand Diploma in Engineering fees starts from $18,500, for one-term Certificate in Computing  fees starts from $12,425

Bachelor’s degree â€“ Around $26,000 to $32,000. Course fee for medicine and veterinary science are much higher. Many bachelor’s degrees can be completed in 3 years.

Postgraduate degree â€“ Fee ranges from $26,000 to $37,000.  Higher fees for subjects in medicine and veterinary science.

PhDs – International PhD students and New Zealand PhD students pay the same fee which is about $6,500 to $9,000 per year for most subjects.

Visas

The Government recently announced changes to assist students who are staying in New Zealand longer than expected due to the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic.

Overview of the main changes and announcements

The Government has announced an automatic extension to most onshore visit visas that expire before 31 March 2021 by two months. It has temporarily suspended the limit for visitor visa holders, permitting them to stay beyond the previous cap of 9 months in an 18-month period.

  • Family members of international students currently studying in New Zealand may benefit from the visitor visa extension if they remain in New Zealand due to COVID-19 restrictions, or either choose to stay for a longer period.
  • Family members of students will also be able to apply for extension visitor visas as the limit of time spent in New Zealand as a visitor has been temporarily suspended.

Work and financial issues

Assistance for foreign nationals program

  • Support available under the Assistance to Foreign Nationals Impacted               by COVID-19 Program has been extended to 31 August 2021.
  • Any foreign national in New Zealand – including international students – may apply for this support if they are experiencing temporary difficulties due to the effects of Covid 19.

Visitor visa holders can study for up to 3 months. To assist students from visa waiver countries, we have developed guidelines for travelling and studying in New Zealand.

What should they bring

New Zealand has very strict laws on what people can bring into the country. To ensure your students are aware of what they can and cannot bring to New Zealand, you may wish to refer your students to the Customs NZ and the Ministry of Primary Industries websites.
